Who owns the houses we live in? That's what the editorial teams of Tagesspiegel and the non-profit research center Correctiv wanted to find out together with Berlin citizens. At discussion events, we invited readers, politicians and representatives of the real estate industry as well as experts to discuss the housing crisis in the capital.
Tagesspiegel editors presented the project as part of the Mapping Cities - Making Cities seminar at the Potsdam University of Applied Sciences in November 2018. The course is dedicated to the analysis, visualization and communication of urban data. In the process, the students worked in groups to create an interactive narrative based on their research findings.
This is where the semester project "Wem gehört(e) der Boxhagener Platz?" came into being. For this, five students spent half a year in archives, offices and at Boxhagener Platz itself to create a house-by-house analysis of the ownership structures at the square. The course was supervised by Prof. Dr. Marian Dörk. The project was further elaborated, reviewed and supplemented together with the Tagesspiegel Innovation Lab.
